In 397 St. Ninian, the first Christian missionary to Scotland, built a whitewashed stone church on the Isle of Whithorn. The native Picts called it HVIT -AERN, the white house. This is a replica of a cross found during an archeological excavation on the site The early missionaries incorporated the five rings of the sun symbol, which was an important Pictish deity, into this early Christian cross.
