According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared on December 9, 1531 to Juan Diego, a man of Aztec descent who had converted to Christianity, " A Lady from Heaven" appeared at Tepeyac, a hill northwest of what is now Mexico City. She identified herself as the ever virgin Holy Mary, Mother of God. She requested that a church be built on the site where she appeared. This church was indeed built and Our Lady has ever after been loved and revered by Mexicans throughout the world. . The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated on December 12. “A great sign appeared in the heaven: a woman clothed with sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.” A shrine was built on Tepeyac Hill, now in a suburb of Mexico City.
