The Book of Kells holds a unique place in history. Its wealth of Hiberno-Saxon illumination is extraordinary. The large manuscript of the four Gospels was probably written and illuminated on the Isle of Iona in the late 8th and early 9th century. After a series of Viking raids, the monks fled the monastery in AD 807. They took the unfinished manuscript with them to the monastery of Kells, in County Meath, Ireland, where it was finished. The design for this cross was adapted from a gravestone found at the old abbey at Kells.
